Created in 1864, Elliott's map documents the burials of 5,844 soldiers—2,634 Union and 3,210 Confederate. The burials of some 269 horses and the position of 152 cannons are also noted on the map.While this map was created in 1864, just like famous one for the Gettysburg battlefield, it lay in in the New Public Library's collection, unknown to most scholars, until recently. It was digitized in 2018 and uncovered by historian Timothy H. Smith and Andrew Dalton, Executive Director of the Adams County Historical Society in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
